TRONPROJECT2002

T-Engine Forum Established

Last year, we launched the T-Engine project to construct a development platform for ubiquitous computing environments. In June of this year, the "T-Engine Forum" was launched as an organization to promote that. Not just domestic firms, but European and American firms are also participating. We are obtaining the support of many firms with such vigor that member firms will approach close to 100 by the end of fiscal year 2002. Already, the project has abruptly drawn interest as close to 10 types of boards based on several types of processors have been released, many appliances, such as a ubiquitous network data terminal and an IP telephone, have been offered, and middleware has begun to be distributed.

T-Engine Related Products

In just half a year, multiple types of CPU boards have been released for T-Engine hardware platforms, and they cover the representative CPU architectures of the embedded line, SH, M32R, MIPS, and ARM. IP telephone terminal that is based on a µT-Engine has been turned into a product, and a developer has succeeded in the development of a terminal for educational use in only several months by combining T-Engine with a group of upper layer middleware.

Recent Activities of TRON Association
1.TRON Advanced Technology Research Group
Through the holding of events such as "21st Century Microelectronics Seminar," this group carries out research that studies ubiquitous network technology and new computer architectures.

2.Next Generation Real-Time Infrastructure Group
Each company's T-Engine open platform product for next generation real-time systems was thrown into the market one after the other from August

3.Version Up WG
This group drew up an extended specification and carried out development of a reference model OS (IIMP) for importing a memory protection function to the ITRON4.0-specification OS. These were released to the public in July. In addition, the group is carrying out a study in order to devise ways to make the design of device drivers efficient.

4.Training and Propagation Group
This group is in the process of compiling real-time operating system texts and making preparations to hold seminars targeted mainly at beginners for the purpose of nurturing embedded system development technicians.

5.Multi-Character OS Application Group
This group is studying the development of a "multi-character code terminal" that can cope with multiple character code systems and multiple networks using a single machine. This is aimed at businesses such as printing.

6.North American Liaison Office
The Association has commissioned the North American Liaison Office to the embedded systems business division of Mentor Graphics, and it is devising ways to strengthen promotional activities in that region.

Related Products One after Another into the Market
Numerous products have been offered, such various tools, simulators, and evaluation systems for embedded system development compatible with the ITRON specification. As for ITRON-embedded application products, the variations, such as automotive information devices, LP gas concentrated monitoring systems, etc., are broadening. The number of JTRON-based operating systems for cell-phones has also broken the 10 million unit mark. In the BTRON-related area, the Cho Kanji 4 operating system and CD-ROM versions of the K'ang Hsi (Kang Xi) and Kojien dictionaries for Cho Kanji 4 have been put on sale.

Specifications Made Public
The TRON Association's Next Generation Real-Time Infrastructure Group issued at the end of March the English versions of the uITRON4.0
Specification
and the ITRON Debugging Interface Specification. In addition, we made public an extension specification for incorporating a memory protection function in the uITRON specification that we had studied from last year as the uITRON4.0 Specification Protection Function Extension (abbreviation: ITRON4.0/PX Specification).

Toshiba Corporation President Tadashi Okamura Inaugurated as New Chairman
The TRON Project held its 14th ordinary general meeting on June 12. At the meeting, Toshiba Corporation President Tadashi Okamura was newly inaugurated as the TRON Association chairman, and Fujitsu Ltd. Corporate Vice President Toshihiko Ono as the new TRON Association vice chairman. At the meeting, among other things, we decided the main points of the current fiscal year business plans: the T-Engine project, the project to nurture embedded operating system technicians, and the promotion of the TRON-specification multi-character operating system.

IPA Commissioned Work: "Information Technology Development Support Project"
The TRON Association developed an ITRON4.0-specification operating system (the IIMP kernel) with a memory protection function as commissioned work in the "Information Technology Development Support Project" by the Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan. Three types of target processors are supported: ARM940T (ARM Ltd.), SH3 (Hitachi, Ltd.), and Pentium (Intel Corp.).
