"Ultra-Kanji" BTRON Operating System Unveiled |
| Personal Media Corporation announced on September 21 that it would begin marketing
in the middle of November a new multilingual version of the BTRON3-specification
operating system that can handle a character set comprising almost 130,000 characters.
The new operating system, B-right/V Release 2, has a complete set of kanji (Chinese
characters) for writing the Japanese language, which is why Personal Media calls
this release "Ultra-Kanji." In addition, the character set also includes
the characters for writing Chinese and Korean, plus most of the other languages of
Asia, including those spoken on the Indian subcontinent. The BTRON3 Specification, which is a subset of the BTRON subarchitecture of the TRON Architecture, can handle up to 1,480,000 characters. These are assigned positions in the data specification called TRON Application Data-bus (TAD). Personal Media's previous release based on the BTRON3 Specification, B-right/V Release 1.1, incorporated the characters for writing the many languages that use the Latin script, plus Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, as would be expected of an operating system developed in East Asia. http://www.personal-media.co.jp/ btron/catalog/cho-kanji/press.html |

¦ÌITRON Adopted for Digital Camera Album |
| Sanyo Electric Co. has adopted JBlend, a JTRON-specification operating system developed
by Aplix Corporation, for a digital camera album it has put on sale. The new digital
album, "Dejikame Arubamu," makes it possible to easily save and view digital
images without having to employ a personal computer. JBlend is a real-time operating system based on a merger of an ITRON-specification kernel and Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java2 Micro Edition. The ITRON kernel provides the high-speed processing required for image data processing, and Java supplies the graphical user interface (GUI), which requires multifunctionality and other refinements. As a result, the development environment becomes more efficient, and the product engineering time is shortened. http://www.jblend.com/ |

Toyota Adopts ITRON |
| The 10th annual ITRON Open Seminar was held from June 30 through July 1 at the Nihon
Kyoiku Kaikan [Japan Education Hall] in the Hitotsubashi section of Tokyo. On the
first day of the seminar, a representative of Toyota let it be known in a lecture
that 32-bit microcontrollers powered by the ¦ÌITRON real-time operating system (RTOS)
were adopted for the first time in a new Toyota model called "Land Cruiser Prado." Land Cruiser Prado was put on sale in June. The 32-bit microcontrollers and ¦ÌITRON are used to improve combustion, control exhaust gases and actuate the brakes and air bags. In the future, this system will gradually be installed in all Toyota models, thus reducing development and manufacturing costs. The ¦ÌITRON RTOS was selected because the source code is open and the RTOS can be configured to the needs of the user. |
